Project Overview
The Nelson Road property required extensive renovation to address its dated interior, improve the arrangement of the existing rooms and make better use of the available roof space.
The house was stripped back to allow the structure, services and internal layout to be carefully upgraded. A full loft conversion created valuable additional accommodation, while a new staircase provided safe and practical access without compromising the usability of the floors below.
The completed renovation retains the traditional character of the period property while providing the space, comfort and functionality expected from a modern family home.

Client Brief
The clients wanted to modernise the entire property while preserving the features and proportions that gave the house its original character. Their priorities included creating additional living space within the loft, improving movement between floors and replacing the ageing roof with a durable traditional finish.
They also required a new kitchen and bathrooms, updated building services and a consistent decorative finish throughout the house. The completed home needed to feel cohesive, comfortable and suitable for long-term family living.

Challenges & Solutions
-
A major challenge was delivering an extensive renovation while national COVID-19 restrictions were affecting working practices, material availability and construction programmes.
-
Browne & Sons adapted the programme to maintain progress while following the required safety measures. Trades were carefully scheduled, deliveries were coordinated in advance and communication with the clients remained clear throughout the changing restrictions.
-
The structural complexity of combining a new loft floor, staircase and replacement roof also required close coordination between the different stages of the project. Detailed planning allowed each element to be completed safely and in the correct sequence.

The Result
The completed renovation has transformed the Nelson Road property into a spacious, comfortable and carefully finished family home. The loft conversion provides valuable additional accommodation, while the new staircase connects each level naturally and makes the best use of the existing footprint.
The natural-slate roof and considered external detailing respect the property’s Conservation Area setting. Internally, the bespoke kitchen, new bathrooms and complete decorative finish create a cohesive modern interior while retaining the proportions and character of the original period home.
Despite the challenges created by pandemic restrictions, the project was successfully delivered to a high standard, giving the clients a practical and attractive home designed for long-term use.

Client Review
"Mike is a fantastic builder. He is thorough, spots any trouble early, and does a great job all round. We worked on a kitchen refit, reversing and adding a staircase, a new attic room and shower room, and a new bathroom. At every stage he was spot on with timings, suppliers and the standard of work is brilliant. He was good at communicating with us throughout which was very reassuring as the spec changed over the project. The costs changed with the spec, but Mike was always very clear about what the options were and what things would cost. Best builder we have ever worked with, by far."
